General Kite Rules
Everyone probably knows the general rules when flying a kite. However, some of us forget or some do not know and this is a very important part of flying kites.
The general kite flying rules are:
1. Never fly in a thunderstorm or when storms are eminent in your area!
2. Never fly near or around an airport!
3. Never fly near or around electrical wires!
4. Never fly over a parking area!
5. Never fly with people downwind from where you are flying!
6. Be courteous to others and you will be a happy flyer!
Knots for your kite lines
The right kind of knot is imperative for connections of your kite whether it be a single line kite of power stunt kites. The first knot should be an overhand loop. To make this loop bring the end of your line back on itself about 8 inches. While still holding on to the end of the line along with the second part of the line, wrap the big loop over your fingers and tuck the end of the big loop into the circle you just created. Try to slide this knot you just created as close to the bottom where you are still holding onto the very end of your original string. This should have created a giant loop. This is the loop you actually connect to your kite.
Loops for your kite lines
Loops, what are they good for? Absolutely nothing.... is the wrong answer! If your kite has a grommet (a hole ringed with metal), thread the loop through the grommet then pass the line on handle, spool, etc. through the loop. Pull it tight and your kite is attached with a loop four times the strength of a single knot on the kite.
Loops II for your kite lines
Loops II for your kite lines--The second loop to know is the 'Larks head Loop'. This is used when no grommet is present to link to your kite. The best flying kites have a lead loop on them. This is simply a loop of line with the knot facing the flyer. Take the loop you created at the end of your flying line and double it back on itself to create 'butterfly wings'. Pinch the two lines in the center of the butterfly wings with your thumb and finger. This is the loop you set behind the knot of the kites' lead loop. Pull this snug and "Go fly a kite!"
Music and Kite Flying
Don't be afraid to try something new. The only thing besides the kite I make my class bring with them is music. Be it a CD player, AM-FM radio, a boom box, or MP3 (My personal choice), you need music! Whether your music is soothing or really rocks you, it doesn't matter. Music creates a rhythmic beat. When your whole body reacts to the rhythm you won't crash your kite as often as those who fly without music. Now pretend you are putting on a show for your family and friends. Use big movements and "Paint the Sky"! I'm Lovin' it. Come on, "let's go fly a kite!"
